Holiday? Yes, but with nature in mind, please! If you value nature, then let us prove to you that urban destinations can be sustainable and close to nature too. In these three city matches, excursions into the countryside are part of the experience – whether it’s Lake Zurich, Reichswald or Saxon Switzerland. Get out in the fresh air!

Day 1:

Uetliberg: Uetliberg offers a slightly different view of Zurich. The Uetliberg cable car takes you comfortably up to the top, but if you’re feeling athletic, you can reach the summit in 1 hour and 40 minutes. From the city’s local mountain, you have a fantastic view of Zurich and the lake.

Wildnispark Zürich: the wilderness park boasts two locations – the Langenberg Wildlife Park with native wildlife and the Sihlwald Nature Discovery Park. The park is so vast that you can hike on your own or camp in the summer months.

Barfussbar: shoes off! This bar is tucked away on the banks of the Limmat River and is housed in an Art Nouveau swimming pool with a view of the Old Town. After all, what could be better than ending the day with a delicious drink in a barefoot bar?

Day 2:

Lake Zurich: the fifth-largest lake in Switzerland is a must-see. Become a captain yourself, let yourself be sailed around or just gaze at the water – you decide!

Lakeside or beach bathing: bathing has a long tradition in Zurich. Since private bathrooms were a rarity in the 19th century, more and more public baths were established. A visit to the lakeside or beach bathing spots is a real experience in good weather.

Open-air cinema: as soon as it gets dark, the most beautiful places in Zurich turn into open-air cinemas. A film evening right by the lake, in an outdoor pool, in front of a historic backdrop or with a picnic basket in a meadow – your options are almost limitless.

Day 3:

Succulent collection: a special collection of succulent plants has been marvelled at here for over 100 years. Discover more than 20,000 succulents across several greenhouses.

Rapperswil: a city break within a city break? Visit this picturesque town, which is located on the right bank of Lake Zurich. Rapperswil is also known as the city of roses, with over 20,000 blooming specimens.

Street food festival: the Hardturm Street Food Festival is a particularly tasty highlight. From 1 June to 14 July 2024, visitors can embark on a culinary journey of discovery with delicious treats from around the world.

Day 4:

Limmat: hot summer days are perfect for taking a stroll or a hiking trail along the Limmat – or even for drifting away on a rubber dinghy. Tip: get information about suitable routes and exits in advance to ensure your journey runs smoothly!

Old Botanical Garden: the Old Botanical Garden is located in the centre of the city. The captivating collection of exotic and old trees makes a visit to the palm house here a must.

University of Zurich Botanical Garden: why visit just one botanical garden when there are two? In addition to a medicinal plant garden, the University of Zurich’s garden also features a Mediterranean garden, a crop garden and a pond. The futuristic glass dome houses also house tropical plant species to marvel at.

Nuremberg

Nuremberg

Day 1:

Nuremberg City Beach: the City Beach in Nuremberg has been open again since the end of April. The ultimate holiday vibes are guaranteed – and a summery mood, of course.

Vegan guide: where can you buy vegan food in Nuremberg and where can you shop sustainably? The city has published special travel guides for dining and shopping.

Day 2:

Lake Wöhrder: a sandy beach, a lake for bathing or boating, a shore for cycling – right in the middle of the city? Now all you need is the right weather! Still want more water? Then head to the Franconian Lake Districtabout a 50 minutes’ drive south of Nuremberg.

Imperial Castle: if you are exploring the city, be sure to visit the Imperial Castle. Located in the middle of Nuremberg, it is considered one of the city’s landmarks and features impressive architecture, beautiful gardens and a spectacular view over Nuremberg.

Shop green: on the edge of the Old Town, you’ll find the first multi-brand fair fashion store in Germany!

Day 3:

Franconian Switzerland: prefer to spend your time in the great outdoors? Then take a day trip by car from Nuremberg to Franconian Switzerland with its distinctive rock formations and caves, and explore one of the more than 100 castles, palaces or ruins.

Night watchman tour: if you still haven’t had enough fresh air by the evening, take part in a night watchman tour, where you will explore the city from a different angle through various themed tours.

Day 4:

Canoeing on the Pegnitz: get active during your holiday with a canoe tour through the Pegnitztal. Fun times are guaranteed!

Teufelshöhle Pottenstein: one of the largest and most fascinating stalactite caves in Bavaria is only about an hour away by car from Nuremberg and can be visited as part of a guided tour.

Day 1:

Cycling tour: Dresden is easy to explore by bicycle, whether directly through the city to see the most famous buildings or passing by on a relaxed bicycle tour along the Elbe River.

Grosser Garten: as the name suggests, the Grosser Garten (lit. ‘large garden’) is the largest park in Dresden and a wonderfully green oasis. Right in the heart of the city, the park has everything you could wish for: Baroque buildings, a lake with rowing boats, a park railway, green meadows and even a zoo.

Sustainability city map: yep, it’s here! A large directory of restaurants, shops, second-hand shops and much more.

Day 2:

Bastei Bridge: about an hour from Dresden, the Bastei Bridge towers over the Elbe valley. The landmark attracts thousands of visitors every year looking to experience the spectacular panoramic view. The bridge is not only a popular photo opportunity, but also a starting point for hikes through the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

Dresden Schlössernacht: Dresden Schlössernacht on 20 July 2024 is not to be missed. Expect a varied programme across 15 stages, with several party areas, culinary diversity and sensational fireworks.

Neustadt: if you’re looking for healthy, sustainable food, there are countless tasty options in this district.

Day 3:

Pillnitz Palace: this palace and its spacious park are located on the outskirts of the city. You can visit the arts and crafts museum or the palace museum. Changing workshops such as ‘Design for and with plants’ or herbal studies are also offered.

Dresden Heath: hiking in Dresden? Sure thing – there are lots of routes to trek in the heath to the north-east (approx. 20 minutes by car or 50 minutes by public transport).

Film nights on the banks of the Elbe: from 27 June to 1 September, the cameras will roll on the new season of film nights on the banks of the Elbe, with action, comedy and romantic films under the open sky.

Day 4:

Radebeul: in this suburb of Dresden, outstanding vineyards characterise the undulating river landscape. How about a visit to a winery or a wine tasting? (Approx. 50 minutes by public transport)

Moritzburg: Dresden’s romantic palaces are a must-see – so we recommend a trip to the impressive Moritzburg Palace. It is located north-west of the city of Dresden and is built on a symmetrical artificial island.
