Because as the clock strikes midnight, this charming square is transformed into a minor extravaganza for the legendary Doce Uvas. But even more architectural treasures await on the Gran Vía. Madrid’s 1,300-metre-long main avenue meanders proudly through the city. It’s no wonder that more than 10 million visitors walk along it every year. It’s definitely earned its affectionate nickname of ‘Madrid’s Great Way’. Seen enough of Madrid’s Great Way? How about taking a short breather in the Parque del Retiro? Right next to the Museo Reina Sofía, this beautiful spot invites you to unwind and relax – in an area that covers a whopping 1.43 square kilometres. The centrepiece of this stately park is the crescent-shaped monument to Alfonso XII, which depicts the former ruler gracefully enthroned upon his great horse. 
Football fans take note: Madrid also has an architectural highlight in store for you. Royalty honour us with their presence at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. But we’re not talking about Spanish royalty, of course. We mean Real Madrid. Be it nerve-racking Champions League matches, heart-wrenchingly close league games or European Cup thrillers – this famous turf has witnessed a great deal of action. In 1964, it even saw Spain become European champions. Speaking of royalty: Spain’s actual royal palace is also worth a visit. This baroque building in the heart of Madrid, better known as the Palacio Real, attracts visitors from around the world. But they’re not only impressed with the artistically decorated façade of this masterpiece, built in 1751. They also marvel at its majestic interior décor. Its elegant, Cinderella-style ballrooms, the Royal Chapel and Hall of Mirrors are the stuff of childhood dreams.
