Home to no fewer than 12 million people, the French capital is the second largest metropolitan area in the EU after London. Paris is the uncontested political, economic and cultural focal point of the country, and packs in so many sights that we can hardly decide which to tell you about first. It’s best perhaps to simply get out and explore. Stroll down the magnificent Champs-Élysées boulevard, taking in the Arc de Triomphe, the Place de la Concorde, and Tuileries Garden in one go.
Carrying on in the same direction brings you to the Marais, a neighbourhood still redolent of the spirit of Paris in times gone by, presenting a refreshing contrast to the grand boulevards. Its winding alleys and quiet corners are an unmissable experience: the Marais is historically the centre of Jewish life in the city, and is vibrant with Jewish culture. Take a seat in one of its many cafés or restaurants and you’re instantly so much closer to the Paris way of life.
We’d suggest you then take the métro to another district that defines the Parisian character: up to the heights of Montmartre. It’s tempting to while away a whole day in the environs of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, snacking, shopping, seeing and being seen. Take a tip from us: wander, ramble, get sidetracked – it’s the best way to experience the essence of Paris.

Ascending the Eiffel Tower might be the main goal of your visit, or you may be content to view it as part of the scenery, but one thing you should on no account miss out on is the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, which in many ways is the very heart of France itself.
When the sun goes down and the lights come on, every corner of Paris is transformed into a idiosyncratic party spot or charming artistic venue. Not forgetting of course that the delights of dining and imbibing are here brought to a fine art. Plenty, then, to fill your Parisian evenings.
